Godhood: Sic Semper Divinus

Post by Sevasta on Sun Mar 12, 2017 5:21 pm

This world is one of many.

A fresh bloom among the seething mass of the multiverse.

It is virgin, untouched by divine hand or otherwise.

Though quiet now, a soft hum can be heard.

The first note of the symphony to come.

The energies of Creation wait here.

Could they feel they would be eager.

Someone will come forth to wield them.

Or maybe many will come.

Only time will tell.

As for what will be brought forth...

Welcome to Godhood

Vral strides into the universe, inspecting all around him.

"It appears that this could be fertile ground. It is time to sow seeds and to begin recording."

Vral reaches into a pocket and takes out a planet, more than large enough to allow life to form. With practice he sets the planet in the habitable zone. It is not much more than a ball of dirt but large, capable of growing a great many things. Vral sits back and observes. He scribbles on a well worn pad "Tisante", recalling earlier work on much a similar planet.

"It certainly could though I'll leave the life to others for the moment."

Jomontet reaches into his sleeve and pulls out a small bag of dust.

"I have other concerns for now."

He opens the bag and spreads the contents across the universe.

"Magic will be with this universe from the very start"

With a snap of his fingers Magic comes into being, wild and unfettered.

He surveys the change and nods.

"It's a start"

Vral observes, feeling the presence of magic wash over him. He shakes his head, scratching something down.

"A pity. The discovery of magic leads to such interesting experimentation in advanced forms. However, there are plenty of opportunities that exist now."

He grins, imagining the possibilities.

Velsavis sees the system, and knows that progress is inevitable. She observes the creation of magic, and scowls. The progress of technology is always superior to that of ethereal arcana.

She looks away and weaves a tapestry, creating a place for her own, favoured life to grow. She sees the planets of other gods, and knows that while they will have their own crucibles of progress in time, she wants her people to be forged in harsh locales, pushed together by necessity and forced to innovate by design.

A small planet, large enough to support a vibrant society if properly propelled, is developed and placed just at the edge of the habitable zone (as in Mars to Earth), located so that it will form a small planet of chilly, windswept tundras, heavy snowfalls, and icy lakes with no major oceans. Its atmosphere is heavy with CO2 (87% by composition), with trace amounts of argon, oxygen, helium, and other components. It is extremely mineral rich in dense metals and ores, specifically of the kinds needed for advanced industry. She names it Althera.

She creates the basics of life - insects, plankton, bacterium, mosses and the like. Some of these species themselves are magically active or sensitive in nature, given the actions of other gods.

She also creates a race she expects to develop dramatically in the future - the Altheri. Medium-sized and strongly built, possessing of two digitigrade legs and four arms, all with retractable, razor-sharp claws, and thick fur to thrive in the chilly environment. They possess four eyes, two forward focused and two wide set, allowing themselves unparalleled and wide vision. In their initial form, they run on all sixes, seeking out the mosses and greens that currently exist. Most importantly for Velsavis, they possess extraordinarily large and dense brains relative to the previous species, and in the future could be expected to possess formidable intelligence. Given the actions of other gods, she establishes them with an innate opposition to magic - being completely incapable of performing it themselves (though they certainly could research it based on observation, should that come to pass)

[2 acts for Mars-size planet as described above]
[1 act for basic, mundane, mindless supporting life in a reasonable ecosystem]
[3 acts for the future-known Falseri]

Valnir rose from a stupor his for currently just that of a plain iron mask, he looked about to the planets below him and waved at the earth like one that had caught his eye as jagged spikes of iron, copper, and bauxite sprouted from its surface. He chuckled in a resounding voice "Just as it is needed to spur metalcraft, now to plan my craftsmen"

As the metal sprouted like stony trees he begun to take shape, as his figure turned into that of a classical knight, before he sat back and looked at his work content for now and waiting to gather more strength

So it begins

Jomontet emerges from the ether, and with him comes light, shining into the darkness

He's alone with his star for but, comparatively, a moment before another joins him.

Vral comes, and with him a planet - Tisante. A fine atmosphere and abundant water promises an easy time for any life, the barest spark required.

Jomontet, perhaps out of boredom, perhaps from raw desire, charges the very fabric of the universe with magic. All existence thrums and shivers as his command spreads.

Velsavis is the next, and she sets to work right away, a second smaller planet emerging from her whims. She names it Althera, and it is a strange place, with a rich alien atmosphere and little water amongst it's icy wastes.

She seeds this place with the building blocks of life, and in it's heady air springs up the basics - mosses, lichen, producers and decomposers.

Then she takes the time to craft her own species, the hardy Altheri. She makes sure to prepare them for future intelligence and forces them to make use of their own talents - no Altheri shall ever cast magic.

Lastly, Valnir emerges and casts his mighty hand across Tisante. The earth shifts and churns as the composition shifts, metals of every sort spiking and spreading throughout the planet, so rich that massive spikes jut amongst the land. Iron, Copper, Gold, Silver, even Bauxite and Platinum simply sit, gleaming in the light of the star.

With this, the gods rest, and time passes...

With a massive roar, Jomontet's star heralds the existence of hundreds of others, whole galaxies springing up in the background as all creation sings in harmony.

Jomontet's saturating of the universe with magic brings forth an explosion of sudden magical activity, mana eddies whirling and forming throughout both Tisante and Althera as pockets of mana pool and deepen and swirl.

There's nothing on Tisante to enjoy the sights, but on Althera many of the basic species learn to simply ignore the need for normal food - they feed on magic itself, so rich does it rush into existence. So then do the creatures that feed on the most basic life have magic fill their bodies, and so on and forth, until every creature upon the surface save the Altheri is magic in some way or form.

The moss and lichen on the surface of the icy planet grow like wildfire in the Co2 heavy air, and the magic only assists - the planet, at night, is lit in large swathes of dim blue light from the mana-swamped lichen and plants opening their flowers to the mana-heavy air to grow and grow and grow. Soon, even fruit bearing trees emerge, their harvests perpetually ripe and heavy year round.

Forests spring up in record time, their trunks armored and protected by the density of their ambient magic.

Such is the sheer force of magic imprinted on the universe, alongside the sudden influx of life, that even without the gods does a school of magic form. Soul magic emerges, and any living creature possessing a soul can, in times of need or desire, burn their life force brightly to power massive feats of wild magic. The price they pay is their own life - a shortened lifespan every cast, and in great amounts at once, a sudden onset of ill health. Not that there is any creature capable of doing so...yet.

The Altheri survive amongst the icy plains of their home, their diet completely herbivorus as, indeed, food is right there for the taking. With no predators to emperil them, and their fur protecting them from the cold, they explode in population, but soon their numbers grow idle and lazy, for what is there to do but eat and breed?

And with that the time is come

The gods stir from their rest but...

So does one more. The pantheon grows.

Nuclear fire burns. Life has begun to form. Metal seeds the planets, ready to be formed and perfected. Magic, the power of the soul fit to be harvested and turned to useful purpose. The Mechanism stirs.

Velsavis overlooks both her creations and those elsewhere. She sees the other planet, near shimmering from the amounts of metal contained within, and turns away - she has other interests for now. She must force progress.

She looks upon Althera, and sees her favoured children. They are strong, yes, but they have grown lazy - how could they not, with nothing to threaten them? She thinks, and in an instant, decides to solve two problems at once - that of magical influence and that of idleness. She creates a great number of small lifeforms, magically active, and much more powerful then their small size could suggest. She also grants the Altheri the spark of intelligence. She focuses it within them, imbuing a strong sense of social hierarchy, of pack mentality, of mutual co-operation in pursuit of the protection of their young and the safety and growth of their pack, providing for the base trappings of future tribalism.

She knows that they will need to recover from this unknown onslaught, adapt, discard their herbivorous ways, and begin to work together to overcome this new threat. To fight - and to become the masters of their planet once again. They must learn, with animal intelligence and cunning, if not true sapience, to use and exploit the mosses and lichens that have previously occupied their world, and that have changed through the absorption of magic swirling in the cosmos. What could be done with them? Could some, under the right circumstances, experience combustion even in their largely inert atmosphere? They must discover what they can, even if they can not yet truly understand it, on their own - in the crucible of evolution. Of innovation. Of progress. They have been given the biological tools of strength and intelligence - and now they must use them.

She grants them one boon - the creatures and other species that may one day threaten them through magic may very well do so through fireballs, or lightning bolts, through this new form of soul-based magic that she has observed, or through other as-yet unknown fel means. But they will not turn the minds or bodies of individual Altheri against them. She grants them the mental and physical strength to resist the direct influence of magic upon their bodies and minds.

Feeling spent, she retires to the Pantheon, to observe both the other gods, and the ever moving celestial tapestry

[2 acts for the creation of numbers of diverse small, magically active life. Can be prey for the Altheri, who must use their intelligence and work together in packs to overcome them given their abilities - or fall victim as prey themselves.]
[2 acts for granting the Altheri intelligence, to adapt to this threat.]
[1 act to grant the Altheri a natural immunity to outside magical influence (over their own mind/body - i.e no individual-targetted magic may affect them).]

Let's see...

Jomontet rummages in his sleeve and pulls out two bottles of Night.

This day and night cycle needs some touching up.

He uncorks both bottles and tosses them at their respective planets. The contents spill into the atmosphere and form a black cloud-like mass that blocks out the light of the sun, though not the stars or heat or reflected sunlight. The cloud breaks down slowly under dawn's light and comes back together as the sun sets.

Ah, there we go, a proper and lovely night.

Jomontet taps at his mask.

Still missing something though. Ah, moons.

He conjures two moons, one of with crust of Amethyst and the other of Beryl. He flips a coin to decide which goes where and the Beryl moon goes to Tisante while the Amethyst, of course, goes to Althera.

Hm, that spices things up no?

Vral rolled up his sleeves, satisfied with the progress made thus far. He began preparing Tisante for what he hoped to accomplish in the future.

From his cloak he pulled out a set of tools. He set about creating creatures for the planet. Large creatures that could take advantage of the open plains, or set about climbing upon the massive metal spikes that covered the planet. Creatures that burrowed under the earth, ambushing the others. Vral tweezed and snipped and stitched them all together. He let them wander, to get a proper distribution across the dirt for the next phase. He watched as they consumed the metal spikes and each other, marking out on his paper globe exactly where they all ended up and their various habits and details.

Pulling back from his work, Vral caught site of Althera and saw the challenge of the Altheri. Interested in further growth of these species, Vral sought another species on Althera, one to whom which the Altheri might either broker peace or incite war.

Vral scoured the planet until he found a race of small creatures, crafty herbivores he decided to call the Vanu. With their six apendages, used in both locomotion and manipulation, Vral saw potential for the small furry creatures to be more. He reached into his cloak and brought forth a key, and used it to unlock their minds. He reached into the Vanu and placed within them work ethic, respect and pride in themselves, and a strong desire to survive. Once satisfied in the results, Vral shook the soil from himself and returned to the Pantheon, eager to prepare the next phase of life for the hardships of Tisante, as well as to observe the experiments the Vanu would undertake to survive.

"Life on Tisante seems a bit too sparse to support large creatures."

Jomontet gestures vaguely as basic life begins to bloom across the planet.

"Just the usual models, though much more efficient at photosynthesis, an adaptation to let them photosynthesize during the limited day and during the longer night."

He gestures again, calling forth small animal life.

"As well as some nocturnal creatures, ones quite capable at seeing by starlight."

"Tisante could harbor significant progress...if given species prone to innovation."

The Mechanism grinds and churns, life taking shape as the cosmic cogs spin them to form.

"Useful, adaptive brains...but only moderate size. And how about a craving for food that is not easily acquired, animals and shelled seeds? They must develop tools to compensate."

Sxryi creates a medium sized roughly humanoid species, unique but unnamed. They have long, dextrous fingers and well-formed brains to make up for a lack of exceptional brawn and encourage tool-making. With a forward-facing visual system and decently vertical form, perhaps they will be the first innovators. Or perhaps not. They have magical prowess, as does practically all life in this universe.

"Perhaps, if some of these animals are resourceful, I shall grant them the intelligence to continue the turning of The Mechanism in coming eons..."

The echoing distortions of the grinding workings of The Mechanism slow as it returns to its resting state. With its fellow dieties, it will remain watching and awaiting progress.

Valnir looked apon the cosmos with a please look as the animals begun to form and the other divinities begun  to play with the life and introduce struggles to the world as he moved over to Tisante and with a massive movement he waved over it  as from the earth itself beings sprouted and formed. They where Humanoid in nature, with thin wiry frames that belied their origin, with bodies made to pounce and hunt, keen senses and dull spotted bodies to hide themselves.

"The first of my chosen peoples to grace this system, they shall hunt and fight until the sun burns out"

As this ended Valnir stepped back and looked with a proud gaze, this would be his first gift to the life of the system and would be all he did for the moment

The Altheri are confused and overwhelmed by the sudden competition, only their sudden influx of intelligence and burgeoning sapience saving them as they begin to band together into bands and groups for safety and pack tactics. Their magic resistance serves them well against a few species that use it to confuse their prey.

The Vanu, by comparison, begin a natural rivalry with the Altheri as they too begin to hunt together, large groups of 15-20 Vanu scurrying about and using swarm tactics to take down the abundant other small species and even pull down Altheri. Their magically sharpened claws find easy purchase in anything they slash as the two species begin a fierce competition.

The sudden change to the day night cycle, now only 6 hours of day and 18 of night, throws both planets in upheaval for a time as the flora and fauna adapt to a mostly nocturnal existence. Only the Altheri are active during the day, and it is this too that gives them an advantage over the Vanu. The moons sparkle brightly but nothing yet can wonder at them

On Tisante, Jomontet's flora flourishes and like their counterparts on Althera, become manavoric. The smaller species begin to learn to subsist on the springs of magic that pop up commonly.

The Metallovores first focus on the massive spikes of easy to reach metal, and soon such outcroppings of metals are few and far between. The metallovores turn on each other and the smaller species, a natural check on themselves and all other life on the planet.

The unnamed species of Sxyri stumbles and faces hardships from the get go, the smaller species too canny from being hunted by the metallovores and the larger species too hard to hunt one on one, the unnamed life sadly not yet learning pack instinct. The focus on living near concentrations of seed-bearing trees, and bash the large seeds against the ground crudely, living simple and fearful lives.

The Sungazers flourish however, their natural pack behavior allowing them to take down even the largest of the metallovores, though they too prefer the easy pickings of the unnamed life for maximum volume of meat to effort required.

Time passes, and soon the gods stir.

But three more presences ripple through the fabric of the universe, as the Pantheon swells even further

State of the Divine Spheres:

Evolution: Quite a lot of this going on

Innovation: This too is seeing quite some use.

Politics: Nope.

Night: Well there's a lot more then there used to be and a lot more life at night.

Magic: Everywhere

Creativity: A bit of this is becoming present.

Metal: Still a lot, but less then there used to be.

Legends: Nope.

Conflict: Every moment of every day and night, across two planets.

Duplicity: Nope.

Absorption: Nada.

Experimentation: A bit.

Science: No

Tech: The barest bones.

Exploration: Only of animals.

Psionics: Nope

Survival: A constant struggle, but everpresent.

Death: All the damn time.

Light: Still enough!

Life: Yup, there's life.

Hospitality: Are you joking?

Passion: The base passion of beasts

Hunger: Yes

Destruction: Mmmhm.

Act Gain:
Acts

Velsavis: 7 acts

Jomontet: 7 acts.

Valnif: 11 acts

Vral: 6 acts

Sxryi: 7 acts

Drylax: 7 acts

Ayan: 6 acts

Arlamor: 7 acts

Encylopedia Divinus:

Tisante: An earthsized earthlike planet, heavily metallic.

Althera: A mars-sized planet with a Co2 heavy atmosphere.

The Altheri: A two-legged four armed bipedal race, the first possessors of souls. Currently in a hunter-gatherer lifestyle of roving bands with the first rudimentary rock tools. Active during both day and night, sleeping whenever they need to.

The Vanu: Squirrel sized 6 limbed creatures, who possess strong pack instincts and hunt in 10-15 strong groups. Their magical claws can scythe through most any living tissue and they use swarm tactics. Nocturnal.

Metallovores: A variety of large creatures that eat meat and metal, though mainly meat now that easy access to metal is gone from the surface, only the burrowing types bothering.

Sxyri's Species: Bipedal humanoids, omnivoric but only for seeds and meat. As they lack the natural abilities to hunt and do not have true intelligence yet despite an intuitive tool usage, they mainly bash large seeds against rocks to split them open and eat the soft insides.

The Sungazers: A biurnal species of bipedal felinids, their strong pack hunting nature and keen senses, combined with the ability of naturally adaptive camouflage, makes them arguably the apex predator of Tisante.

Soul magic: The only existing form of magic. Burns the user's lifeforce to power incredible acts of wild magic. Shaves a minimum of one year of life per use, and large uses can cause sudden illness. Only things that have souls can do it. Gods cannot use it even when manifested.

First a ripple, then a sunburst as Ayan swirls into being, born once again into yet another universe, announcing her arrival with a joyous laughter. "Ah, to be born again," She crows, then alights around these two fledgeling world, already ripe with life, and light. Such mana! The cloud blocking her view irritated her for a moment until she pierced through herself, but the temporary annoyance was soon rewarded, the planets beneath aglow with wonders both large and small. To see so much life adapt to the cruelties of her brothers brought a smile to her face - Life will always find a way, it seemed, and her good mood, once fouled, continued. Until she sees a species utterly outpaced, abandoned by their creators to live a miserable fate.

A pang in her chest, of pity, and she takes her first action in this world to grant them a boon. "Why, you don't even have a name, do you? This won't do at all..." With a gentle touch, she reaches out and touches each of their minds, opening them and inspiring four things: First, the drive to form bands for mutual protection. Second, visions of tools, simple weapons that they were designed to use by another, and basic implements for farming and cracking the shells for the bounty they crave. Third, the gentle embrace of a hearthfire, and the knowledge to create it responsibly, lest they burn their precious sources of whatever food they might still eat. Finally, a question: 'Tell me your names, won't you, young ones?' Then, and only then, did she ascend once more, to take her place among the stars, and watch for now, to see what sort of company she's landed in.

Velsavis sees her creatures struggling, fighting against their competition on Althera. It huts her to see such pain amongst them, but she knows it is necessary. To force progress. To force innovation.

She looks once again upon Althera, at the struggle for survival playing out across its surface. She sees them struggling against their magical foes, and knows that while their intelligence allows them to survive, their bodies must be made more robust. She thickens their hides, strengthens their muscles, sharpens their claws, and quickens their reflexes in small, but equal measures.

She knows that intelligence has saved them. And so it will lead them forward. She strengthens their minds, granting them great intuitive sense, great logical ability, and great force of will, allowing them to grasp a path forward, plan how to achieve it, and be strong enough to see it through.

She also knows that this could be their downfall - intelligence is a gift, yes, but it can also be a curse if misused. She grants to them a great internal sense of social responsibility - the security and the future of their species as a whole is paramount, and while she knows that they will squabble amongst themselves as all independent creatures will, they will never sacrifice each other without great cause, or condemn others for the sake of their differences, whatever they may be. They will, despite their differences, come together to fight against the outside forces that threaten them.

Finally, she decides to leave the cosmos for a time, to live amongst the children she has so lovingly crafted, and in some small way, show them a path forward.

On Althera, Velsavis runs with her pack, tearing Vanu with tooth, claw, and tool, both achieving dominance, and gently pushing the most correct of the rudimentary theories the Altheri have begun to formulate forward, as she carves a pathway to progress for her children.

---

[1 act for the granting of increased physical ability amongst the Altheri.]
[3 acts for the great expansion of the mental abilities of the Altheri - granting them great intuitive sense, great logical abilities, and great force of will.]
[1 act for the imbuing of a great sense of overall social solidarity amongst the Altheri - the safety, security, and progress of their species as a whole is absolute - whatever their current internal disagreements - and future political differences - may be. They will not succumb to disastrous internal strife or ruinous partisanship, and will not abandon either their current or future people out of expediency or distaste - not while the true dangers of magic and mana exist.]
[1 act for a temporary incarnation amongst the most dominant pre-sapient tribe of Altheri - working for the allotted period within the confines of the pack structure to become a natural alpha with a clear successor, and working to concentrate them in the most beneficial area of the planet for sedentary life, so as to serve as the nucleus for a future civilization.]

"So, who else is here, and what gave you the bright idea to blot out the sun?" And adjusting her locks, with another huff she folded her arms as she floated in the starry sky. Looking over to the other planet, just in time to watch her fellow goddess lavish gifts upon what was obviousl her chosen people. "Well then. That's a thing."

"I am."

Jomontet fishes out a piece of Golden Apple from his drink and eats it.

"And no one blotted out the sun. There's just as much light as before but a fraction of it doesn't reach the ground. Quite the improvement, believe me."

Seeing the overabundance of metal on the planet, and the general apex predatory nature of the Metallovores, the Goddess of Light imbues another gift. "Let's give them a bit of incentive then, raise the stakes. Shall we, gentlemen?" Reaching out to the fundamental natures of the metal and ambient mana, she forces a change in their fundamental composition. From the two soft metals, Copper, and Zinc, a new, harder crystaline structure could be forged in the furnaces of this dominant species, one that could even pierce their hides, or serve to protect them. However, a balance must be achieved, and the touch of any living creature would cause this alloy to glow a calm blue-green, bright enough perhaps, to draw the eyes of their fellow hunters.

Of course, anyone could do it without the predators, but the power to pierce titanium would naturally have to be more complex than its mastery. This will not be an easy thing to forge, only sharpen.

And so she takes her repose once more, watching her fellow gods and goddesses while basking in the sun shunned by her fellows.

Acts:

Create the glowing alloy of Orichalcum (Copper and Zinc): 3 Acts - This metal is difficult to forge and would require greater mastery of metallurgy than titanium, however it can easily pierce the former.
